As the 4th generation owner of Spencer Logging Co., Stephen Spencer is no stranger to adversity. Nearby large-scale saw mills continue to challenge the long-running company to remain as efficient and relevant as possible.
To achieve this goal, Spencer continues to implement new technology and high efficiency to his production process. Every piece of wood, from scraps to the main lumber, is collected and sold. No resource goes to waste.
Excess woodchips are collected from the production process and sent to paper mills, while an accumulating pile of sawdust will become a useful tool in charcoal briquette manufacturing.
“[Larger saw mills] can send out as much in one day as I do in a week,” Spencer said. “We have to be able to make the most of what we’re given.”
