As the saw cut through logs, the smell of fresh cut wood and saw dust filled the air. To many people this is not a typical day, but Stephen Spencer makes it his way of life.
Spencer, owner of Spencer Lumber Co., described his fourth generation company as a tough competitive business. Being around the sawmill since he was 10 years old, Spencer said over the years technology has become easier and a little more efficient, requiring fewer workers.
“I can do the work with one or two, what I used to do with three or four,” Spencer said. “Everything is more efficient.”
With a lifetime of experience at the sawmill and a college degree he believes the global economy is constantly changing.
“Don’t ever think that you’ll ever learn it all,” Spencer said.
