Kevin Mainord is worried the people of the New Madrid Floodway are going to get stiffed.
On May 2, 2011, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers breached the Birds Point levee in Mississippi County near East Prairie.
Mainord, MRM Ag Service sales and marketing director, is one of many affected by the flooding. Mainord said that farmers have not and will not fully recover this year from the flood.
“There are no assurances that anyone will pay for it [the damages],” Mainord said. “If the government does pay, it will take years and take legal action.”
According to the Flood Act of 1928, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has a mandate that they have to rebuild the levee or it will be a violation of the law.
“We need to use evidence to convince Washington that the Corps has lost their focus,” Mainord said. “The focus needs to be on providing flood control.”
